DSA gets digital
The DSA are starting to use different channels to communicate with you and your pupils. They’ve been working hard to develop and promote their online and social media channels to get up-to-date information to you as it happens.
They can also do the same for your pupils, using sites that they already use. We know that over half of all 16 to 24 year olds spend around an hour each day on social networking sites, and that one in five spend an average of one hour a day using YouTube. So this is where we‟ll be taking DSA‟s messages and information – it‟s a more effective method of reaching and engaging with young people.
Many of us have long recognised the benefits of going online for our personal and professional lives. Most of us have email addresses, many of us have Facebook accounts, use online banking and shopping, and even learn online.
There are many benefits to doing this – we can all save time, save money and keep in touch. Did you know the average household can save around £560 per year just by paying bills and shopping online, for example?
What DSA has done
DSA was one of the first government agencies to use an online booking service. They‟ll continue to develop their electronic services; all online test bookings now receive email confirmations rather than printed letters, for example.
Many of you will be aware of the excellent progress they’ve made in developing their YouTube channel at youtube.com/dsagov. Since it launched in September 2009, the videos on it have been watched over 1.3 million times. If you take a look you‟ll find a number of videos on a range of subjects, such as independent driving, „Are you ready?‟, the Highway Code and some hard-hitting messages such as „My daddy‟.
And if you have your own website, blog, Facebook or Twitter account you can put our videos on there – it can help your customers and perhaps attract new ones.
We now have over 3,000 followers on Twitter and our messages are regularly re-tweeted. We keep our website updated and important information for you and your pupils is available on Directgov and Business Link, where online versions of many of our leaflets and booklets can be found from now on.
